Casa di Langa: A Sanctuary in the Heart of Piedmont, Italy

Tucked away in the undulating hills of Piedmont, near the charming town of Alba, Casa di Langa is a haven for food and wine lovers. Our visit coincided with the truffle season, a magical time of year when the landscape is shrouded in misty mornings that give way to brilliant blue skies.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that Casa di Langa is more than just a luxury retreat—it’s a celebration of the region’s rich culinary and vinicultural heritage. The property seamlessly blends modern design with the rustic charm of Piedmont, creating a setting that feels both indulgent and deeply connected to the land.

A Gastronomic Journey

The heart of the Casa di Langa experience is undoubtedly its culinary offering. At Fôrma, the hotel’s restaurant, every meal is a testament to the bounty of the region. We began our journey with a truffle-infused tasting menu that showcased the white truffle’s versatility and unmatched aroma. Each dish was a masterpiece, from the delicate tajarin pasta with freshly shaved truffle to the creamy risotto that perfectly balanced the truffle’s intensity.

The kitchen team’s commitment to local ingredients shines through in every bite. Seasonal vegetables from nearby farms, hazelnuts from the Langhe hills, and artisanal cheeses all played starring roles in our meals. The presentation was as artful as the flavors, with plates that looked almost too beautiful to eat.

An Ambiance Rooted in Nature

The atmosphere at Casa di Langa is one of understated elegance. The architecture and interior design draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape, with earthy tones, natural materials, and panoramic views that invite the outdoors in. Each of the 39 rooms and suites is a sanctuary, featuring private terraces and luxurious touches like freestanding bathtubs and sustainable amenities.

We didn't go for the classic truffle hunting experience - having heard so many stories of people planting truffles on these tours. Instead, our local friends called one of their local truffle dealers, who sold us truffles from the back of his 1990s Subaru. Stored in Tupperwares inside a cooler plugged into his cigarette attachment, the truffles were the we’d had. We were also happy to learn that the pricing of the white truffles in the hotel were not that far off from the dealer prices. Always nice to know we aren’t getting ripped off.

Back at the hotel, we went for the classic white truffle and taglioni - simple but perfection.

A Final Toast

As we sipped our final glass of wine on the terrace, watching the sun set over the misty hills, it was impossible not to feel a profound sense of gratitude.

For anyone seeking a luxurious taste of Piedmont, with all the truffles, different wines, and breathtaking scenery the region has to offer, Casa di Langa is a wonderful experience. A stay here is not just a getaway; it’s a journey into the heart and soul of the Langhe.

Rustic luxury.

The Wine: A Tribute to Barolo

No visit to Piedmont is complete without an exploration of its iconic wines, and Casa di Langa provides a front-row seat to the world of Barolo. The hotel’s wine cellar is a treasure trove, featuring an extensive collection of labels from across the region. Guided by the expertise of the in-house sommelier, we embarked on a tasting journey that highlighted the nuances of Barolo—a wine that embodies the spirit of the Langhe.

We sampled vintages from legendary producers and boutique wineries, each glass offering a different expression of Nebbiolo. The bold, tannic structure and floral notes of Barolo paired perfectly with the truffle-rich dishes we enjoyed. A standout was the 2016 vintage, which balanced power and elegance in a way that left a lasting impression.

For those who want to go that extra mile in their wine tasting, Casa di Langa offers guided tours of nearby vineyards and wineries. Walking through the vines on a crisp autumn afternoon, with the sun breaking through the mist, was a moment of pure magic.

We visited dear friends at Cascina Adelaide - a family owned vineyard making red and white wine in the region since multiple generations. Their white is to die for, it was perfect to sip with the autumn sun slightly warming our faces. Their range of reds will please anyone from a Bordeaux lover with their heavier Fossati or Burgundy lovers with the lighter Langhe Nebbiolo.

Clear blue skies.
